Juvenile Traffic Benchbook—Revised Edition

All updates issued since this benchbook's last publication date have been integrated into the content of the benchbook. The Juvenile Traffic Benchbook is current through May 1, 2012. The benchbook is in PDF format and is fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat's search features.

NOTE: This benchbook does not represent a wholesale revision of its content. Indexes and other special sections have not yet been updated and are not included.

This benchbook covers the special procedures applied to traffic violations adjudicated in the family division of the circuit court. It includes discussion of the following topics:

  • Jurisdiction of civil infractions and criminal offenses
  • Obtaining custody of a juvenile following a "drunk driving" offense
  • Permitted procedures for treating juvenile traffic violations, including MCL 712A.2b, the consent calendar, and the formal calendar
  • Dispositional options
  • Restitution
  • Abstracts of adjudications and expungement of court records
  • Elements of criminal traffic offenses commonly committed by juveniles

The Juvenile Traffic Benchbook-Revised Edition is a companion volume to MJI's Traffic Benchbook-Third Edition, Volumes 1-3.

The first edition of the Juvenile Traffic Benchbook was funded by a grant provided by the Michigan Department of State Police, Office of Highway Safety Planning and the United States Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention, Office of Justice Programs.
