5/15/08 The Family Medical Leave Act has been amended to provide eligible employees working for covered employers two important new leave rights related to military service.  
  Calendar Year 2009 DWI Court Training Initiative. 7/11/08
  The 2007 Drunk Driving Caseflow Assistance Fund and Drug Case Information Fund payments have been issued.  
  Secretary of State issues a reminder on court reporting of drug crime convictions.  
  Felony convictions reportable to the Department of State are identified in a revised chart. Contact your SOS court liaison with questions.  
  Court Reporting/Recording/Operator certification renewal notifications will be mailed June 2, 2008, to all active reporters, recorders, and operators. 8/1/08
5/8/08 The second quarter payments for the Court Equity Fund for State fiscal year 2008 have been issued.  
  MCR 3.106(B)(2) requires each court to provide SCAO with a list of those court officers or bailiffs who have been authorized to seize property or conduct evictions, and notify SCAO of any changes. The list is updated as changes occur. NOTE: Lists must include effective and expiration dates. Please send updates to Tami Rewerts at rewertst@courts.mi.gov or fax to 517-373-7517.

  • Managing Cases Involving Persons with Mental Disabilities, June 9-12, 2008, at NJC in Reno
  • Co-Occurring Mental and Substance Abuse Disorders, August 18-21, 2008, at NJC in Reno


  • Under a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, NJC is offering an $800 scholarship toward tuition to trial and special court judges for both programs. Complete and fax the court application to 775-784-1269. If you have questions, please contact Program Attorney Daphne Burns at 800-255-8343 or at burns@judges.org.

      The National Center for State Courts' April 16, 2008, Federal Funding Opportunities is now available.  
    4/17/08 Deferred presentment licensees (commonly known as payday lenders) may be suing for treble damages on insufficient funds checks received in deferred presentment transactions.  The Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation issued an order specifically notifying deferred presentment licensees that any attempt to collect treble damages under MCL 600.2952 for insufficient funds checks violates MCL 487.2158.  A copy of the order is posted on the OFIR website at:  http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dleg/Deferred_Presentment_Order_5_230545_7.pdf. Any judge, magistrate, or clerk who becomes aware of a deferred presentment licensee/payday lender seeking treble damages in violation of the Act, is advised to forward copies of the pleadings to OFIR via Susan McGhee, mcghees@michigan.gov, 517-241-1639, for administrative action.
