Jail Overcrowding
Many trial courts and counties face recurrent problems with overcrowding in jails.
In June of 2003 the SCAO convened a meeting of chief judges and other trial court
representatives to discuss strategies for addressing jail overcrowding. Based on the
experience of trial courts that have experience with jail overcrowding, checklists and
other information documents were prepared for a presentation at the Michigan Association
of Counties in August of 2003. Those materials and other resource materials are
provided below.
At the August 19, 2003, Annual Conference of the Michigan Association of Counties,
a panel on jail overcrowding entitled "Jail Overcrowding - A Serious Problem
Requiring Comprehensive Solutions" was presented. Following are the conference
materials from this session.
