UPDATE INFORMATION ON MANUAL FOR COURT REPORTERS AND RECORDERS

A revision was posted July 1, 2008, to comply with amendments to MCR 2.306, MCR 7.204, and MCR 7.205. See pages 3 through 5 and pages 31 through 34 in Section 9. Also, pursuant to suspension of the expedited summary disposition docket , effective May 7, 2007, additional language was removed from items A1 on page 1 and A3 on page 3, both in Section 6.

A revision was posted September 28, 2007, to specify the proper format for transcribing testimony from a previous deposition that is read or played at a trial or hearing in lieu of live testimony. See item 1b on page 1 of Section 5.

A revision was posted September 5, 2007, to comply with MCR 8.108(G)(6), which raised the late fee from $30 to $100, effective May 1, 2007. See item E on page 4, item G4 on page 6, and item D4 on page 7, all in Section 3.

A revision was posted May 4, 2007, to comply with Third Amended Administrative Order No. 2007-2, regarding Expedited Summary Disposition. Effective May 7, 2007, the expedited summary disposition docket is suspended indefinitely. See item D on page 2 of Section 6 and item A3 on page 4 of Section 7. Also Chapter 3 in Section 7 was deleted and Chapter 4 was renumbered. The index was also revised.

A revision was posted May 1, 2007, to comply with an amendment to MCR 8.109. See MCR 8.109 on page 45 of Section 9.

A revision was posted March 23, 2007, to comply with a decision made by the board at its quarterly meeting in March. See item M on page 14 of Section 3.

The January, 2007 revision of the Manual for Court Reporters and Recorders is a significant rewrite of the manual. The section, chapter, and page numbering has been replaced, the number of sections has increased, and the contents have been rearranged to make it clearer that all sections except Section 2 apply to all court reporters and recorders, not just officials employed by the courts. Below is a summary of the redesigned manual.

  • Section 1 - This section describes the overall role of the court reporter/recorder, his/her required conduct, and reference to the various associations.

  • Section 2 - This section defines the official court reporter/recorder and his/her duties and responsibilities to the court; it includes information about maintenance of the courts' records and the cooperative role the court reporter/recorder has in this regard.

  • Section 3 - This section presents the information regarding certification including defining the board of review, stating the requirements in MCR 8.108(G), and setting forth the policies of the board.

  • Section 4 - This section prescribes the proceedings for logging, marking exhibits, and taking depositions.

  • Section 5 - This section sets forth the required transcript forms and includes examples.

  • Section 6 - This seciton describes the general requirements associated with furnishing transcripts as prescribed by statute and court rule, including fees and accessing court files.

  • Section 7 - This section presents the court rules pertaining to the court reporter/recorder role in appellate procedures, including SCAO-Approved forms.

  • Section 8 - This section presents reference materials, such as a resource list and rules for appropriate punctuation for court documents.

  • Section 9 - This section presents excerpts from selected Michigan Court Rules as they pertain to court reporters/recorders.

  • Section 10 - This section presents excerpts from selected Michigan Compiled Laws as they pertain to court reporters/recorders.

  • Index - This is a subject matter index to assist one in finding content when using a paper version of the manual.
