Michigan Court Interpreter Testing

The State Court Administrative Office conducts certification testing for Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Vietnamese, and other languages for which there is a Consortium test. Beginning in 2007, all previously uncertified interpreters will be required to take and pass a written examination before they may take the oral proficiency examination. This will help to predict whether candidates are ready for the oral examination. Candidates for all languages take the exam at the same time. There will be no cost for taking the written examination. Michigan's 2008 foreign language interpreter exams will be offered on the following dates:

Written English Exam

March 17
June 30

Spanish Oral Test

May 15 and 16
September 8 and 9

Arabic Oral Test

May 9
August 21 and 22

Oral Test for Languages Other than Spanish and Arabic:

August 21 and 22

The State Court Administrative Office reserves the right to cancel any tests due to low participation or other unanticipated reasons.

Once a person passes the certification exam, the State Court Administrative Office issues a certification card and his or her name is added to the official list of certified interpreters the State Court Administrative Office provides to all judges and court administrators in Michigan courts.
