CY 2010 DWI Court Training Initiative

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Office of Safety Programs, Enforcement and Justice Services Division is now accepting applications for the Calendar Year (CY) 2010 DWI (Driving While Impaired) Court Training. This is a national training initiative designed to assist communities with developing DWI court programs and is conducted in cooperation with the National Center for DWI Courts (NCDC), a division of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. Under this initiative, communities will be selected to participate in a facilitated planning process that will begin in March 2010 and conclude in October 2010. Participating communities must identify a team of professionals who will participate in the regionalized training. This program was developed as a team oriented training; therefore, individual participation is not permitted. The type of training will depend on the current status of the team.

The application procedure is similar to last year's application. When a jurisdiction is applying for the training, they must coordinate with their State Highway Safety Office by applying for the training through them. The Highway Safety Office will determine the teams that will be provided with training (noting that they have received the application and their approval) and then forward this information to the Enforcement and Justice Services Division via facsimile or by e-mail by September 15, 2009. The application also requests that the judge of the team provide a letter of commitment (page 7).

Please note that the closing date for the application is August 28, 2009, to the Highway Safety Offices. Teams that are selected for the training will be notified in October 2009, in order to make arrangements on the court calendars and for travel arrangements. Training sessions are slated to begin in March 2010.
