Filing in the Michigan Supreme Court
The following is intended only as the barest outline of filing requirements designed to answer the most frequently asked questions. For detailed filing requirements, visit Current Court Rules.

Where to File
In order for papers to be "filed" in the Supreme Court, they must be received in the offices of the Clerk in Lansing. There are no other locations for filing and filing is complete only on receipt by the Clerk. The office is open weekdays between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM.

Furlough Days
The Supreme Court Clerk’s Office will be closed, and so will not be accepting filings, on the state furlough days. For purposes of filing deadlines, furlough days will be treated as if they were Court holidays – that is, if a filing is due on a furlough day, it will be accepted as timely if received on the next regular business day. Accordingly, the Supreme Court will be closed on:

Number of copies
Applications for leave to appeal are to be filed in a signed original and seven copies. The application must be accompanied by a notice of hearing and proof of service upon opposing counsel. Only the originals of the notice and proof need be filed. Responses to applications are filed in a signed original and seven copies with an original proof of service.


Filing fees
Applications: $375
(NOTE: If the application involves multiple trial court docket numbers, multiples of the fee are charged.)
Motions for immediate consideration: $150
Other motions: $75

Binding, stapling, fastening, etc.
The originals of applications and answers will be two-hole punched at the top for our permanent files. Copies may be bound, stapled, spiral bound or otherwise securely fastened. The use of clear plastic covers should be avoided.

The requirements of MCR 7.309 apply only to briefs and appendixes in cases in which leave to appeal has been granted.


Roll of Attorneys and Attorney Certification/Certificate of Good Standing
The Supreme Court Clerk is the keeper of the Roll of Attorneys admitted to the practice of law in this state. Certification of admission to practice may be requested as follows:

  • Expendable Certificate: Available on payment of $10 (payable to "State of Michigan") by providing the name of the attorney, the State Bar "P" number and furnishing a self-addressed stamped return envelope, a person requesting such certification can expect the certificate to be mailed out within a day.
