image: Michigan Supreme CourtThe State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) is the administrative agency of the Michigan Supreme Court. Article VI, Section 3 of the Michigan Constitution states that the Michigan Supreme Court "shall appoint an administrator of the courts and other assistants of the supreme court as may be necessary to aid in the administration of the courts of this state." The Supreme Court has administrative oversight of Michigan's courts and exercises that oversight through the SCAO.

Supreme Court Announces updated michigan parenting time guideline

​​The updated Michigan Parenting Time Guideline​ will aid parents in setting up parenting time schedules.  The Guideline reflects increased accessibility (e.g., use of plain language, visual representations of schedules and concepts) and acknowledgement that every family and every child has unique circumstances and needs.  The FOCB estimates that this tool could benefit 36,000 children annually in Michigan, whose families are affected by parenting time ordered in a new divorce, custody, paternity, or support case.  Even more children are affected by modified parenting time orders on existing cases each year.

SUPREME Court: Case Processing for Landlord-Tenant Cases Extended

The Michigan Supreme Court issued an update to Administrative Order 2020-17The Order extends the COVID case processing for landlord-tenant cases to March 31, 2021, consistent with the CDC Order issued on January 29. The complete order as amended on December 29 is available here.​ Read more​

Supreme Court Announces Commission Charged with Closing the Justice Gap, Improving Court Access for All Michiganians​

Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget M. McCormack announced the Court's
adoption of Administrative Order 2021-1​​, which created a new Justice for All Commission that will work toward 100 percent access to our civil justice system. The Commission will be chaired by Justice Brian Zahra, with Michigan Legal Help's Angela Tripp as vice chair. ​Read more​

better data needed in courts, says CHIEF JUSTICE 

On the heels of jail reform bills being signed into law, Chief Justice Bridget McCormack penned an op-ed piece in the Detroit News on January 6 making the case for improved access to data in Michigan courts. In an excerpt, the Chief writes: "Until last year, it seemed everyone had a story (or 10) illustrating why Michigan’s jail and pretrial policies weren’t making our communities safer but were hurting families. But anecdotes don’t drive systemic improvements. Data does." Read the op-ed piece here


The legislature sent a bipartisan package of 20 bills to Gov. Whitmer that will fundamentally reshape how the state utilizes county jails. The bills are based on policy recommendations from the Michigan Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration, a group of criminal justice experts and key stakeholders that was led by Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II and Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack. Read more​.
