About the Court

The Michigan Court of Appeals is one of the highest volume intermediate appellate courts in the country.  It was created by the 1963 Michigan Constitution and heard its first cases in January 1965.  Generally, decisions from final orders of a circuit court or probate court, as well as some agency orders, may be appealed to the court as a matter of right.  Other lower court or tribunal decisions may be appealed only by application for leave to appeal, i.e., with permission of the court.  Read More...

The 2018 COA Annual Report is now available. The Annual Report includes a statistical and graphical analysis of overall court performance.

The Michigan Appellate Bench Bar Conference will be held on March 27-29, 2019, at The Inn at St. John’s Conference Center in Plymouth.  The conference theme is “Just the Facts: The Importance of Facts and the Appellate Record to Responsible Decision-Making and Appellate Advocacy.”  I strongly encourage appellate practitioners of all experience levels and practice areas to attend this conference.  It is a great opportunity to socialize with and learn from Supreme Court Justices, Court of Appeals Judges, court staff, and other appellate practitioners.  The conference offers educational sessions of interest to both civil and criminal practitioners.  Additionally, at the dinner banquet on March 28th, the State Bar of Michigan Appellate Practice Section will present its Lifetime Achievement Award to former Michigan Court of Appeals Chief Judge Michael J. Talbot.

More information about the conference brochure and registration forms may be found on the Bench Bar website, along with scholarship forms.
