Appl​ication Instructions for Michigan Judicial Council

The Michigan Supreme Court is looking for qualified candidates for appointment to the recently established Michigan Judicial Council (MJC). 


BACKGROUND: The MJC was created via MCR 8.128 and is collectively responsible for planning strategically for the Michigan judicial branch, enhancing the work of the courts, and making recommendations to the Michigan Supreme Court on matters pertinent to the administration of justice.  The MJC must be representative of Michigan’s diverse population and regions, ensuring and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. 


The MJC will convene in July, 2021, and embark on a strategic planning process, which will include visioning, analyzing trends, reviewing outreach data, and developing strategic goals and long-term strategies for advancing judicial branch reform and improvements.  The MJC received a State Justice Institute (SJI) grant​ and will work with a consultant over the next year to design and lead an inclusive and comprehensive planning process that will result in a Strategic Agenda for the branch.  Once complete, the MJC, along with other groups, will help build support for and implement the Strategic Agenda.  The MJC will be involved in an ongoing strategic planning cycle for the judiciary. 


TIME COMMITMENT: The MJC will meet regularly as needed to accomplish its work, but at least quarterly, as designated by the Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. Members should anticipate a 10-12 hour a month time commitment if appointed. A tentative meeting schedule is identified below for the remainder of the year. ​

APPOINTMENTS: The following positions are currently open for appointment to the MJC by the Michigan Supreme Court.  One-third will be initially appointed to a two-year term; one-third will be appointed to a three-year term; and one-third will be appointed to a four-year term.  All members appointed or reappointed following these inaugural terms will serve three-year terms.  Terms commence January 1st of each calendar year.  No member may serve more than two consecutive terms. ​

Note: Judicial applicants requesting appointment to represent a judicial association identified above must be nominated by that judicial association. All other applicants, including the four “at large” judicial positions, may apply directly regardless of nomination status.


COMPENSATION: MJC members must serve without compensation.

The questions on the applications cover a variety of topics to ensure the MJC is comprised of members with diverse experiences, qualifications, and perspectives that represent our State as a whole. Applicants should not be discouraged from applying based on any perceived inexperience or an inability to fully answer every question.


If the space provided in the application is not adequate, please enclose a supplemental answer sheet and identify the question number when responding. Applicants may also attach additional materials to the application, including resumes and letters of reference.
