Beginning in 1795, Michigan’s tribal governments and the U.S. government negotiated treaties exchanging tribal lands for a combination of rights, land, money, education, and other services to the tribes.


Boarding Schools

To fulfill its education promises, the federal government forced Indian children to attend boarding schools.

Adoption
